The Benjamin Rush lecture notes consist of 34 notebooks kept by medical students at the University of Pennsylvania, which record the content of academic lectures delivered by Dr. Benjamin Rush (1745-1813). Rush, a socially and politically prominent physician who lived and practiced in Philadelphia, served as a professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine from 1769 to 1813. The handwritten lecture notes in this collection (recorded between 1783 and 1810) present the era's conventional medical wisdom on the causes, symptoms and cures of a range of diseases and disorders.

Abstract:
This notebook contains lecture material transcribed by two different students at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. One portion of the volume contains notes taken by Hiester H. Muhlenberg in 1832; the later material was written by Wellington Smith Mason during two separate courses of lectures between 1894 and 1895. The notes taken by Muhlenberg record a series of lectures delivered by Dr. Nathaniel Chapman on hemorrhages, fevers, cardiac disease and nervous disorders. The notes taken by Mason, decades later, document Dr. Judson Daland's lectures on physical diagnosis and Dr. J.K. Mitchell's lectures on symptomatology.

This collection contains three books of lecture notes recorded by John W. Houck at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in 1900 and 1901. The notebooks correspond to courses taught by Dr. Charles Essig, Dr. James Truman, and Dr. Edward Cameron Kirk, each of whom served as the dean of the dental school for some period between 1878 and 1917. Additional files in the collection contain miscellaneous notes and papers that were previously enclosed in the notebooks. Among these papers are six pharmaceutical pamphlets advertising the antiseptic glycol-thymoline, with testimonials from dentists.

The Logan family was prominent in Philadelphia from the start of the province, serving the people in many capacities, including political, medical and literary. This is a collection of manuscripts obtained by the Library Company of Philadelphia that relates to the Logan family. The collection includes papers of the Logan family members Albanus Charles, Algernon Sydney, Deborah Norris, William Jr., and James as well as family materials collected by Frances A. Logan and William Logan Fox. The collection dates from 1684 to 1925 and consists of family papers, correspondence, diaries, writings, medical texts, lecture notes, financial records, poetry, visiting cards, and invitations.

Abstract:
The Rush Family papers includes material from Benjamin Rush, physician, social activist, educator, writer and patriot; his brother Jacob Rush, lawyer, Supreme Court judge, and patriot; and Benjamin’s son James Rush, physician and Treasurer of the United States Mint. These American men were “strong characters, zealous patriots during the stirring period in which they lived, tenacious of their convictions and of the high standard of individual duty which they set for others, and typified in themselves,” (Richards, page 53). The bulk of the collection is the papers of Dr. Benjamin Rush and his son Dr. James Rush. Judge Jacob, John, Richard and William are represented, but to a much lesser degree. The collection contains two manuscript volumes of notes, 1786 Jan. 12-[17]86 Apr. 5, taken by an unknown author of lectures given by Alexander Monro, 1737-1817. Alexander Monro held the chair of anatomy at the University of Edinburgh during the period the notes were recorded. The subjects discussed in the first volume of notes include general anatomy, jaundice, hernia, pregnancy, and teeth. This collection (1797-1851) contains notebooks kept by three members of the Archer family, a prominent and politically active family of medical doctors based in Harford County, Maryland. The first file contains John Archer Jr.'s notes on materia medica lectures delivered by Benjamin Barton and given at the University of Pennsylvania in 1797 and 1798. A commonplace book (1830-1832) maintained by Henry Wilson Archer, which contains excerpts mostly from history books and poems is the second file. Dr. John Clarke (1760-1850) was an obstetric physician who lectured on midwifery and the diseases of women and children at St. Bartholomew's Hospital and in his home at No. 1, New Burlington Street, in London. This volume contains notes from his lectures, recorded by Samuel Head (circa 1773-1837), a Canadian physician studying in England from 1802 to 1803. These notes provide a glimpse into the education of 18th to early 19th century physicians, who, through the professionalization of the field, became increasingly involved in overseeing pregnancy and childbirth, and taking on the role of "man-midwife."

This collection contains the papers of John L. Stewart, an educator and Public Service Commissioner for the state of Pennsylvania. Documents concerning a 1926 Pennsylvania Supreme Court case that questioned legality of Stewart's position on the Public Service Commission are included in this collection, as are many letters of condolence received by Stewart's wife upon his death.

John Redman Coxe was born on 16 September 1773 in Trenton, N.J. and died in Philadelphia on 22 March 1864. He earned his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1794. Coxe held the positions of Professor of Chemistry (1809-1818) and Professor of Materia Medica and Pharmacy (1818-1835) at the University of Pennsylvania. One volume of notes (254 pages) taken by an unknown student from a course of lectures on materia medica delivered at the University of Pennsylvania by John Redman Coxe, dating from November 1824 to February 1825.

Edward Bell Krumbhaar (1882-1966) was a distinguished pathologist and cardiac physician, as well as one of Philadelphia's leading historians of medicine. A founder of both the Section on Medical History of the College of Physicians and the American Association of the History of Medicine (AAHM), Krumbhaar also served as president of the College and of the AAHM. The E.B. Krumbhaar papers covers Krumbhaar's accomplishments and contributions to pathology and cardiac physiology from the early to mid-twentieth century. This collection contains Krumbhaar's research files, administrative records related to organizations and institutions in which he was involved, correspondence, and medical writings. The John Ashhurst Papers collection documents the life and professional career of Dr. John Ashhurst from 1846 to 1901. John Ashhurst was a prominent Philadelphia surgeon who worked at the Hospital of the Protestant Episcopal Church, as well as the University of Pennsylvania Hospital. He also wrote extensively on the subject of surgery, writing the book The Principles and Practice of Surgery, which was published in several editions. John Percy Moore (1869-1965) was a Professor of Zoology at the University of Pennsylvania from 1912 to 1939, an Assistant Curator at the Academy of Natural Sciences from 1902 to 1938, and held several positions between 1920 and 1956 at the Ludwick Institute, which offered free lectures and courses in the natural sciences. He was also a world recognized authority on leeches. During his career, Moore named six genera, 229 species, five subspecies and four varieties of polychaetous annelids, or segmented worms (Loi 1980). The J. Percy Moore papers document Moore's professional career as a zoologist, primarily his study of leeches and other annelids; educator; and biographer. The collection dates from 1847 to 1963 and consists of his specimen notes, sketches, photographs, 16 mm film, travel logs, and field notes related to his study of leeches and other annelids. George Bacon Wood writings, 1848; undated

Abstract:
George Bacon Wood was born in New Jersey 1797 and received his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1818. He was one of the founders of the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy in 1821, but resigned in 1835 to become Professor of Materia Medica and Pharmacy at the University of Pennsylvania. Later he became Professor of the Theory and Practice of Medicine, a position he held until he retired in 1860. He died in Philadelphia in 1879. The George Bacon Wood writings are a small collection of Wood's lectures, addresses, and other essays, mostly undated, with the exception of one lecture, given at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, dated 1848. Louise A. K. S. Clappe (also known as Louise Amelia Knapp Smith Clappe and "Dame Shirley") was an author and an educator, best known for her published "Shirley Letters, which describe her experiences in gold mining camps and towns in California from 1851 to 1852. This collection documents Clappe's later career as a teacher and lecturer in San Francisco, New York City, and New Jersey. While much of the material in this collection cannot be definitively dated, it appears that most was created from the mid 1860s through the 1890s.
