George Bacon Wood writings, 1848; undated

Abstract:
George Bacon Wood was born in New Jersey 1797 and received his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1818. He was one of the founders of the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy in 1821, but resigned in 1835 to become Professor of Materia Medica and Pharmacy at the University of Pennsylvania. Later he became Professor of the Theory and Practice of Medicine, a position he held until he retired in 1860. He died in Philadelphia in 1879. The George Bacon Wood writings are a small collection of Wood's lectures, addresses, and other essays, mostly undated, with the exception of one lecture, given at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, dated 1848. Abstract:
This collection consists of the personal papers of Martha Emily Shaw, Philadelphia native and graduate of the Training School for Nurses of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. This collection contains a volume of her lecture notes from 1911. Shaw served as a nurse during World War I at the University of Pennsylvania's Base Hospital No. 20 in France. Upon her return from the war, she became an active member of the American Legion’s Helen Fairchild Post #412. Her activities with the Post are documented in this collection's photographs.

Abstract:
The John Ashhurst Papers collection documents the life and professional career of Dr. John Ashhurst from 1846 to 1901. John Ashhurst was a prominent Philadelphia surgeon who worked at the Hospital of the Protestant Episcopal Church, as well as the University of Pennsylvania Hospital. He also wrote extensively on the subject of surgery, writing the book The Principles and Practice of Surgery, which was published in several editions. Located in the collection are correspondence, book drafts, lecture notes, patient case information, and a biography of John Ashhurst by his son among other material. The collection contains five series: "Correspondence," "Writings and Addresses," "Teaching Material," "Medical Research," and "Cash Book." Abstract:
John Percy Moore (1869-1965) was a Professor of Zoology at the University of Pennsylvania from 1912 to 1939, an Assistant Curator at the Academy of Natural Sciences from 1902 to 1938, and held several positions between 1920 and 1956 at the Ludwick Institute, which offered free lectures and courses in the natural sciences. He was also a world recognized authority on leeches. During his career, Moore named six genera, 229 species, five subspecies and four varieties of polychaetous annelids, or segmented worms (Loi 1980). The J. Percy Moore papers document Moore's professional career as a zoologist, primarily his study of leeches and other annelids; educator; and biographer. The collection dates from 1847 to 1963 and consists of his specimen notes, sketches, photographs, 16 mm film, travel logs, and field notes related to his study of leeches and other annelids. Abstract:
The Rush Family papers includes material from Benjamin Rush, physician, social activist, educator, writer and patriot; his brother Jacob Rush, lawyer, Supreme Court judge, and patriot; and Benjamin’s son James Rush, physician and Treasurer of the United States Mint. These American men were “strong characters, zealous patriots during the stirring period in which they lived, tenacious of their convictions and of the high standard of individual duty which they set for others, and typified in themselves,” (Richards, page 53). The bulk of the collection is the papers of Dr. Benjamin Rush and his son Dr. James Rush. Judge Jacob, John, Richard and William are represented, but to a much lesser degree. Between 1801 and 1803 Benjamin Woolsey Dwight studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, where he also practiced at Pennsylvania Hospital, and at Columbia College in New York. Francis E. Dwight was the grandson of Benjamin Woolsey Dwight. In 1882 he took medical instructions at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University in New York, New York. The Benjamin Woolsey Dwight and Francis E. Dwight Papers contain material relating to their medical education - mainly notebooks for lectures attended, and admission cards for Benjamin Woolsey Dwight.

Abstract:
James Wood (1839-1925) was "interested in education, philanthropy, in the various branches of agriculture, in archaeology, history, Indian lore, anthropology, science, in prison reform and above all, in the Bible and religion," (ABS, 2). He was also a business man, serving as President of the Genesee Salt Company in Piffard, New York. The James Wood papers are divided into twelve series: "Biographical Material:" "Agriculture;" Business and Financial Material;" "Collected Quaker Material;" "Correspondence;" "Hugh Barbour Writings and Talks regarding James Wood;" "Journals;" "Organizations;" "Photographs and Albums;" "Political Involvement;" Prison Reform;" and lastly, "Writings by James Wood." Harold J. Chance (1898-1975) worked for peace education through the American Friends Service Committee, the Peace Caravans, the Youth Section of the Emergency Peace Campaign, the Institute of International Relations, and the Friends Peace Service from 1934-1964. Included in the Harold Chance papers are correspondence, journals, writings, mailings, reports, and materials on the Friends Peace Service. Also included are Harold Haines Brinton's (1884-1973) lectures and course notes on topics such as history and religion, mysticism in various religions, religion and social change, and the philosophy of pacifism. Researchers will find this collection is especially rich in Quaker history, specifically relating to the discussion of the use of the Quaker voice by individual Friends' groups, in the mid 1950's.

Louise A. K. S. Clappe (also known as Louise Amelia Knapp Smith Clappe and "Dame Shirley") was an author and an educator, best known for her published "Shirley Letters, which describe her experiences in gold mining camps and towns in California from 1851 to 1852. This collection documents Clappe's later career as a teacher and lecturer in San Francisco, New York City, and New Jersey. While much of the material in this collection cannot be definitively dated, it appears that most was created from the mid 1860s through the 1890s.

Anne Wertsner Wood (1907-2004) was a horticulturist, writer and lecturer from the Philadelphia area. She was an active leader in the gardening community at the local, national, and international levels. She is recognized for her participation in numerous flower shows, garden creations, outreach activities, writings and lectures. This collection contains slides compiled and used by Anne Wertsner Wood. There are two boxes of color photographic slides that date from 1940 to 1983, with the bulk of slides dating from 1940 to 1960. The slides document Wertsner’s travels to various local and international gardens, her involvement with the Philadelphia Flower Show, and her involvement in community activities.

Frank Janczak Hartman (1893-1986) was a radium specialist and consultant who also worked as a "radium hound," searching for pieces lost by area hospitals and industry until his retirement in 1956. The Frank J. Hartman papers provide an insightful view into the changes atomic energy brought to society. Hartman, who owned two companies dealing with radium, clearly saw the product's value, but he also recognized the potential dangers and the damage that could result from the improper usage, storage and disposal of these materials. Abstract:
George Joseph Hermann was born in 1873 in Newport, Kentucky, and graduated from the Medical College of Ohio in 1894. In April 1895, he set up his own practice in Newport, Kentucky. Hermann operated as the general physician for Newport, and later served on the Board of Trustees for Speers Hospital in Dayton, Ohio, and taught anatomy at the Nurses' Training School of Speers Hospital. He died on June 8, 1933, after a two-months long illness. This collection consists of two bound volumes. The first volume includes lecture notes from courses at Medical College of Ohio, beginning in 1892, and several pages of prescriptions for ointments, medicines, and other concoctions. The remainder of the volume contains diary entries about Hermann's professional and personal activities. The second volume is a diary and register, 1897-1898. John Harper Girvin notes on zoology lectures, circa 1887

Abstract:
John Harper Girvin was born in Philadelphia in 1869. He received his MD from the University of Pennsylvania in 1892. Girvin was the Physician for Diseases of Women, and later was given the position of Gynecologist-in-Chief, at Presbyterian Hospital. He was elected a Fellow of The College of Physicians of Philadelphia in 1897, and served as Clerk of the Gynecological Section of the College as well as Secretary. Girvin died in 1938 at his home in Philadelphia. This small collection consists of unbound notes on zoology lectures, presumably from Girvin's undergraduate studes in the Biology department at the Univserity of Pennsylvania, dating to circa 1887.
