Abstract:
Although law has been taught at the University of Pennsylvania since 1790, the formal establishment of the Law School occurred in 1852 and the modern era of the Law School began in 1896 when William Draper Lewis became dean. The Dean of the Law School has traditionally been the head of the Law School, responsible for guiding faculty, developing curriculum, determining admission policies, and overseeing day to day administration of the school. This collection largely documents the work of deans William Draper Lewis (serving from 1896-1914), William Ephraim Mikell (serving 1914-1929), Herbert Funk Goodrich (serving 1929-1940), and Edwin R. Keedy (serving 1941-1945). The records and other materials found in this collection reflect the diverse activities and interests common to the administration of the Law School, including curricula, examinations, faculty matters, committee records, reports, student activities and, and many other topics.
