Sturgis Photograph Collection, undated

Abstract:
The Sturgis Photograph Collection was donated to the College in the early 1980s by Doctors Katharine R. and Samuel B. Sturgis. It contains a large number of the College's pictures and oversize documents (diplomas, certificates, etc.). The subjects of the materials range from portraits of physicians, early hospital buildings, group photographs of medical societies, and class photographs of medical school students, to lecture matriculation cards and medical illustrations. Researchers should note that the collection contains a wide variety of early photographs of the College's buildings, both the previous building at 13th & Locust Streets, and the present building and 19 S. 22nd Street. Over 100 portfolios and bound volumes are included. The collection was processed soon after acquistion. Paul E. Bechet papers, 1899-1947 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Paul Esnard Bechet was born July 28, 1881 and died January 3, 1962. In 1903, he received his medical degree from Tulane University. Early in his career, Bechet assisted during the yellow fever epidemic of 1905 in New Orleans. From 1909 to 1934, Bechet worked at the New York Skin and Cancer Hospital as a clinical assistant, assistant physician, and physician. In his later life, he owned a private medical practice in Elizabeth, New Jersey. The Paul E. Bechet papers consist of the personal papers of Paul Esnard Bechet, M.D. (1881-1962). These papers consist mainly of correspondence with colleagues. Also included are certificates and awards, records of his medical practice, and historical photographs.

Katharine R. Sturgis papers II, 1953-1975; undated (inclusive)

Abstract:
Katharine Rosenbaum Guest Boucot Sturgis was born in Philadelphia in 1903, and graduated from Woman's Medical College of Philadelphia in 1940. Katharine R. Sturgis's connection with the College of Physicians of Philadelphia began in 1951 when she was elected a Fellow. In 1972, after more than twenty years as a member, Sturgis became the College's first woman president. A year later, she was forced to retire due to health problems. Sturgis died in Philadelphia in 1987. The Katharine R. Sturgis papers II is a small collection which dates from 1953 to 1975, and adds to the materials found in the Katharine R. Sturgis papers (MSS 2/355). Recognition for Sturgis' work, correspondence with colleagues, and photographs are included in this collection. Previously catalogued as 10c 123 and Z10c 32.

Princeton at the World's Columbian Exhibition Records, 1893 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Princeton University, then known as the College of New Jersey at Princeton, mounted an exhibition booth at the World's Columbian Exposition, a world's fair held in Chicago from May to October 1893. The collection includes three certificates from the U.S. Congress honoring Princeton for the exhibit, three copies of a photograph of Dr. and Mrs. McCosh seated in the exhibit booth, a written proposal for the exhibit, layout plans for the exhibit, and two bound registers containing the autographs and home cities of visitors to the exhibit.

Robert M. O'Reilly papers, 1862-1925 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Robert Maitland O'Reilly (1845-1912) was the 20th Surgeon General of the United States Army serving from September 7, 1902 to January 14, 1909. O'Reilly served a long military medical career beginning as a medical cadet in August 1862 during the Civil War. Other notable appointments include physician at the White House during both of President Grover Cleveland's administrations, attending surgeon in Washington, D. C., and chief surgeon for several units during the Spanish-American War. He also served as a delegate at the International Conference for the Revision of the Geneva Convention in Geneva in 1906. During his time as surgeon general, O'Reilly made significant improvements by elevating the status and personnel of the army medical corps and furthering medical research. This collection contains both personal and professional correspondence, much of which documents O'Reilly's service during the Civil War. Frederick LaMotte Santee certificates and photographs, 1924; 1945; undated (inclusive)

Abstract:
Dr. Frederick LaMotte Santee was born in Wapwallopen, Pennsylvania, on 17 September 1906, to Dr. Charles LaMotte Santee and Verna (Lloyd) Santee. In 1938, he received his M.D. from Johns Hopkins University. During World War II, Santee served in the United States Navy medical corps, and then as a physician in a Baltimore, Maryland, housing development. He returned to Wapwollopen in 1954 to work in his father's private practice, where he and his father provided inexpensive, and often free, medical care to the poor in the community. Santee died on 11 April 1980 in Wapwallopen, Pennsylvania. The Frederick LaMotte Santee papers consist of three photographs, all undated, and two certificates, dated 1924 and 1945.

Records of the United States Marine Hospital II, 1870-1934; undated (inclusive) 1877-1882 (bulk)

Abstract:
On 16 July 1798, the United States Congress established the Marine Hospital Service under the Treasury Department for the benefit of sick and disabled members of the mercantile marine. Each seaman was assessed a tax of 40 cents per month, and these dues were fed into a hospital fund which paid for the Service. The first marine hospital opened at Washington Point, Virginia, in 1800. The Service was reorganized in 1870. Its activities were standardized under the Supervising Surgeon. The Service was divided into stations with functioning marine hospitals and relief stations where seamen were admitted to local hospitals for treatment; Philadelphia was a relief station of the first class. Each station of this type was under the supervision of a Surgeon. Samuel Hadden papers, 1924-1956 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Samuel Hadden Papers contain the personal papers of Dr. Samuel Bernard Hadden (1900-1988). Born in Dunmore, PA Dr. Hadden completed his undergraduate and medical degrees at the University of Pennsylvania. He then served his internship and residency at the Philadelphia General Hospital. He pursued his interest in neuro-psychology, earning attention for his work in group psychotherapy. While Dr. Hadden was regarded as a compassionate therapist, his views on the treatment of male homosexual clients are controversial as he found homosexuality to be an "experientially determined and treatable condition." The collection contains assorted awards and certificates; papers written by Dr. Hadden; notes; and portraits. An oversize folder contains additional awards and certificates and two group photos of hospital staff, one at Philadelphia General Hospital. This collection was discovered during a survey in the summer and fall of 2015.

The Stella Kramrisch papers, 1921-1998 (inclusive)

Abstract:
As a teacher, lecturer, curator and prolific writer, Dr. Stella Kramrisch (1898-1993) devoted nearly 70 years to the study and appreciation of Indian art. She served as the curator of Indian art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art from 1954 until her death in 1993. The Stella Kramrisch papers document her activities, correspondence and publications as a collector and historian of Indian art. The records in this collection date from 1921 to 1998 and contain information about the art objects in Stella Kramrisch’s personal collection (which were later donated to the Philadelphia Museum of Art), and her publications and research. There is also a large collection of photographs of Indian architecture, paintings and sculpture. The majority of the collection is printed material related to Kramrisch’s research and scholarship; the breadth of the materials in this collection attests to her seminal influence on and ground-breaking contributions to Indian art scholarship.

Abstract:
Cyrus Adler was a prominent Jewish scholar and communal builder. Born in 1863, he had a tremendous role in shaping much of Jewish America by the time of his death in 1940. The collection contains Dr. Adler's business correspondence and personal papers and spans much of his multi-faceted career. It also contains many papers connected to the formation and day-to-day business of the Dropsie College for Hebrew and Cognate Learning. Abstract:
The Beasley family papers are comprised largely of documents relating to three generations of Beasleys who lived in the vicinity of Philadelphia in the nineteenth century: Frederick Beasley (1777-1845), Frederick Williamson Beasley (1808-1878), and Frederick Williamson Beasley, Jr. (1845-1873). The collection includes letters, certificates, published works of the Beasleys, memorabilia from the University of Pennsylvania, guidebooks to the city of Philadelphia, and auction catalogues relating to the interests of the Beasley and Bancker families. The collection includes items with dates ranging from 1802 to 1929, with the bulk of the material falling between 1822 and 1899.
