Abstract:
Machteld Johanna Mellink, celebrated archaeologist and professor of archaeology at Bryn Mawr College from 1949 to 1988, was born in Amsterdam, Holland in 1917. She received her BA in 1938 and MA in 1941 from the University of Amsterdam, and her PhD from the University of Utrecht in 1943. The Machteld Mellink papers cover Professor Mellink's academic and archaeological career from the late 1950s to the early 2000s. Included in the collection are her writings and notes, photographs, publications, and a few excavation tools. Researchers interested in her academic career, as well as her work related to excavation sites such as Kızılbel, Tarsus, and Sardis, will find valuable information in this collection. However, this collection does not provide particularly strong insight into archaeological history, nor Professor Mellink's thought process when approaching archaeological issues. Robert S. Pressman papers, 1934-1985 (bulk) 1856-1996 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Robert S. Pressman graduated from the Temple University School of Medicine in 1946 and received a Master of Medical Science degree in Internal Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania. Pressman served as an Associate Professor of Medicine at Temple University and as head of the infectious diseases section at the Albert Einstein Medical Center. He was a president of the Philadelphia County Medical Society and of the Pennsylvania Society of Internal Medicine. He also served as president of the medical staff at Albert Einstein Medical Center. Pressman was elected a fellow of the College of Physicians in 1955 and served as its president from 1984 to 1986. The Robert S. Pressman papers document Pressman's professional role in various medical societies in Philadelphia, as well as his research and writings. Fred B. Rogers papers, 1948-1985 (bulk) 1922-2000 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Fred Baker Rogers was Professor of Preventive Medicine at the Temple University School of Medicine and an active member of the medical community in Philadelphia and throughout the East Coast. He received his M.M.S. in Internal Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania, his M.D. from Temple University, and his M.P.H. from Columbia University. Rogers was a prolific author of articles and books on medical history, from local doctors to infectious outbreaks, with a specific focus on preventive medicine and public health. The Fred B. Rogers papers house the files of Rogers and document both his education and career. This collection particularly captures the unique interactions between many members of the medical community in Philadelphia, especially those with interest in or ties to public health and preventive medicine, as well as interactions with the College of Physicians of Philadelphia and its various fellows and contributors.

Paul E. Bechet papers, 1899-1947 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Paul Esnard Bechet was born July 28, 1881 and died January 3, 1962. In 1903, he received his medical degree from Tulane University. Early in his career, Bechet assisted during the yellow fever epidemic of 1905 in New Orleans. From 1909 to 1934, Bechet worked at the New York Skin and Cancer Hospital as a clinical assistant, assistant physician, and physician. In his later life, he owned a private medical practice in Elizabeth, New Jersey. The Paul E. Bechet papers consist of the personal papers of Paul Esnard Bechet, M.D. (1881-1962). These papers consist mainly of correspondence with colleagues. Also included are certificates and awards, records of his medical practice, and historical photographs.

Pennsylvania Horticultural Society records, 1791-2006 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) was founded on November 24, 1827 by fifty-three prominent Philadelphians; among them Horace Binney, David Landreth Jr., William Davidson, George Pepper, Nicolas Biddle and Moses Brown. Emulating similar societies existing in England at the time, the men formed their Society to promote “a highly instructive and interesting science for the purpose of improving the growth of vegetables, plants, trees, fruits and flowers.” Since that time, the Society and its membership has fostered “…an appreciation of plants, acquiring scientific knowledge about them, disseminating horticultural information, and involving the public in gardening and beautifying the City of Philadelphia.” More recently, the Society has worked specifically to beautify the city and help realize William Penn’s founding vision for Philadelphia to be a “greene countrie towne.” This is a collection of administrative records from the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society. Abstract:
James Wood (1839-1925) was "interested in education, philanthropy, in the various branches of agriculture, in archaeology, history, Indian lore, anthropology, science, in prison reform and above all, in the Bible and religion," (ABS, 2). He was also a business man, serving as President of the Genesee Salt Company in Piffard, New York. The James Wood papers are divided into twelve series: "Biographical Material:" "Agriculture;" Business and Financial Material;" "Collected Quaker Material;" "Correspondence;" "Hugh Barbour Writings and Talks regarding James Wood;" "Journals;" "Organizations;" "Photographs and Albums;" "Political Involvement;" Prison Reform;" and lastly, "Writings by James Wood." This collection contains many materials, including correspondence, photographs, record books, awards, and printed material such as newspapers and pamphlets.
