Longshore family papers, 1819-1902 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Longshore family was active in Philadelphia medicine in the 19th century and the Longshore family papers includes material from Thomas Longshore, his brother Joseph Longshore, and his wife Hannah E. Myers Longshore. Thomas Longshore was a teacher and a supporter of women's education and social reform, especially abolition. Joseph Longshore (1809-1879) was a physician who supported women in acquiring quality medical education. He was active in founding the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania and later, the Penn Medical University in Philadelphia. Hannah E. Myers Longshore, M.D. (1819-1901), enrolled in and graduated from the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania’s first class in 1851 and became Philadelphia’s first female physician in private practice. She lectured extensively first at the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania and then at the Pennsylvania Medical University. Robley Dunglison autobiographical ana, circa 1852-1862 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Robley Dunglison was born in Keswick, England, on 4 January 1798. He attended the Royal College of Surgeons in 1818, received a license as surgeon apothecary from the Society of Apothecaries, and began practice in 1819. In 1823, he received an M.D. from the University of Erlangen. From 1823 to 1833, Dunglison was professor of medicine at the University of Virginia; from 1833 to 1836, he was professor of medicine at the University of Maryland. In 1836, he came to Philadelphia to become professor of the institutes of medicine at Jefferson Medical College. He held this post until 1868. He died in Philadelphia in 1869. The Robley Dunglison autobiographical ana was written by Dunglison, circa 1852, and is comprised of eight volumes, with some supplemental correspondence previously tipped in. An ana is a collection of memorable sayings of, or anecdotes and interesting information about a person or place. Mary Wickham Bond papers on the "real" James Bond, 1907-1997 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The lives of James and Mary Bond, a Philadelphia ornithologist and author, respectively, were altered the day that author Ian Fleming, a bird lover who was familiar with Bond’s book, “The Birds of the West Indies,” appropriated James Bond’s name for his fictional spy character. The resulting confusion prompted Mary Wickham Bond to write “How 007 Got His Name,” in 1966, in which she tells the story of the real James Bond. This collection consists of Mary Wickham Bond’s collection of information regarding her husband, her own works on the writing, publishing and promoting of her books about her husband, and David Contosta’s writings about her husband.

Abstract:
Arthur Huff Fauset (1899-1983) was a Philadelphia-based civil rights activist, author, anthropologist, folklorist, and educator. This collection dates from 1855-1893, measures 27 linear feet, and largely documents Fauset's endeavors as a creative writer, with much of the material being drafts of his work. It also contains correspondence, notes and research materials, scrapbooks, financial records, and miscellanea.

Abstract:
Dorothy M. Spencer (born 1907) was an American anthropologist who was a participant observer among the Mundari-speaking Adivasi tribespeople of India during four periods between 1939 and 1952. This collection features her notes from these expeditions on individual villagers, their customs, daily lives, and town meetings. It also contains several academic papers, materials from two courses taught by Spencer in the Department of South Asia Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, and several vinyl records and two 8mm films.

Abstract:
This collection includes material collected by Siegfried Weisbeger (1896-1984), proprietor of the Peabody Book Shop in Baltimore Maryland and confidante of H.L. Mencken (1880-1956), a noted writer, editor, and social provocateur, famous for his disdain for common morals and received wisdom. The collection contains correspondence between the two men and other correspondents of the Peabody Book Shop, manuscripts and published writings by and about Mencken (many of them signed), and autobiographical writings and poems written by Weisberger.

Mary A. Maverick hectograph copy of memoirs, 1881

Abstract:
Mary A. Maverick was an early Texas pioneer and diarist, born in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, in 1818. She married businessman Samuel Augustus Maverick in 1836. She was the mother of ten children, six surviving to adulthood. She was a resident in and around San Antonio from 1838 to her death in 1898. This unbound hectograph copy of a manuscript memoir of her life, dated 1881, records details of her large family and the enslaved people in their household; life in and around San Antonio before and after Texas statehood; events of the Mexican-American War and Civil War; and interactions and conflicts with local tribes, including captivity narratives of Matilda Lockhart and Mrs. Webster.

Abstract:
Susan Dillwyn Physick was born on June 22, 1803, in Philadelphia, the second of four children. Her parents were Elizabeth Emlen, whose family was one of the wealthiest in Philadelphia, and Philip Syng Physick, the prominent physician. In 1824 she met naval Master-Commandant David Conner, and the two married on June 25, 1828. The Conner family papers consist primarily of 23 journals kept by Susan Dillwyn Physick Conner from 1832 to 1856. The collection also includes her unfinished autobiography with amendments by her son, a scrapbook, two notebooks, two journals by her son, one journal by Philip Conner’s wife, two letters (one by Mary Lewis, one by Philip Conner), three account books, two published books owned by Susan Physick Conner, and notes and drafts by Arthur Hale, Philip Conner’s son-in-law.

Abstract:
Marvin Rosefield Keck, (1895-1971) was a musician who served in World War I in Admiral Niblack’s Flagship Band of the Mediterranean Fleet on the Flagship Olympia. The Marvin Rosefield Keck papers, which date from 1916 to 1972, consists of newspaper clippings, correspondence, diaries, drawings, photographs, scrapbooks, and unpublished writings. The collection covers Keck's experience in World War I as a band member in the United States Navy aboard the U.S.S. Olympia and his experience in the American Legion band in South Dakota after World War I.

Constantine Hering and Calvin B. Knerr family papers, 1820-1940 (bulk) 1820-2003 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Dr. Constantine Hering (1800-1880), born and educated in Germany, immigrated to Philadelphia in 1833 and devoted his life to the study, practice and education of homeopathic medicine in the United States. As such, he is considered the father of homeopathy in America. Hering founded several schools and organizations devoted to teaching homeopathy, especially the North American Academy of the Homeopathic Healing Arts, aka the Allentown Academy, in 1836, and the Hahnemann Medical College of Philadelphia in 1848. Hering’s pupil and eventual son-in-law and professional assistant, Dr. Calvin B. Knerr, also practiced homeopathy. Knerr was integrally involved in the editing of two of Hering’s books and also devoted much time and effort to writing Hering’s biography, The Life of Hering. This collection primarily houses papers of Dr. Constantine Hering and his son-in-law, Dr. Calvin B. Knerr from 1820 to 1940. H. H. Fick autobiography, circa 1935

Abstract:
The collection comprises a scrapbook containing clippings of an autobiography written by Heinrich H. Fick, a German-American educator, writer and poet, born in Lübeck, who spent much of his professional life working in the public school system of Cincinnati, Ohio, and who was noted for his leading of the training program for German teachers, and his development of the bilingual German-English curriculum. His career there spanned the 1890s until 1918. The work, entitled "Zwischen Anfang und Ende: mein Leben" (Between the beginning and the end: my life), was published in installments in the Chicago German-language newspaper Sonntagpost, not long before Fick's death, in 1935. Fick tells of both his personal and his professional life, and also, at times, about current events, such as the assassination of President Lincoln, the Chicago fire of 1871, and German-American festive occasions. Joseph Hergesheimer (1880-1954) was a prominent American novelist and short story writer of the early 20th century whose best-known novels include The Lay Anthony (1914), Three Black Pennys (1917), and Java Head (1919). This collection presents a fragmentary sample of his notebooks which include drafts of stories, poetry, and recollections of F. Scott Fitzgerald. These are supplemented by autobiographical material, bibliographies, a reminiscence about writer James Branch Cabell, and correspondence (from Dorothy Hergesheimer and Louisa Jessup) with William McCarthy, the donor of the collection.
