Abstract:
The Division of Environmental Research (DER) was established as a department of the Academy of Natural Sciences in 1947 by botanist and limnologist, Dr. Ruth Patrick. Originally called the Department of Limnology, the department was envisioned by Patrick as a multidisciplinary team of scientists devoted to helping protect the quality of the environment. Not only was environmental research a novel idea for the time, but the multidisciplinary nature of the research was also innovative. The primary goals of the Division were to, "understand aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, including the effects of natural processes and human activities; apply this knowledge to assess ecosystems health and developing watershed-level strategies for enhancing environmental quality; and work with diverse stakeholders, including government, community groups, industry and environmental organizations to improve environmental stewardship" (ansp.org). Originally established in 1950 as the National Society for the Study of Communication, the International Communication Association (ICA) has grown to be the largest worldwide academic organization devoted to the systematic study of communication. The collection is composed primarily of administrative records created and/or collected by various officers from 1946 to 2016, and serves to document the association's development over the years. Materials include correspondence, board meeting minutes and reports, bylaws and constitutions, conference proceedings, division records, financial records, membership records, and publication records.

The Civil War Museum of Philadelphia records, 1886-2006 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Civil War Museum of Philadelphia was chartered in Philadelphia in 1888 with the goals of “the collection, preservation and maintenance of a free library, more particularly upon military and naval subjects relating to the War of the Rebellion in the United States of America, the formation of a museum of implements, relics and muniments of war, and the erection and maintenance of a building for lectures and meetings.” Rutherford B. Hayes served as the Museum’s first president. The Museum was housed in various rented spaces until 1922, when it was moved to 1805 Pine Street. In 2008, the Museum was closed to prepare for a new building, originally intended to open in 2014. The Civil War Museum of Philadelphia records date from 1886 to 2006. Abstract:
This collection contains materials documenting the development of nursing and nurse alumni groups at institutions founded by Jewish benevolent groups and organizations in Philadelphia from the 1890s through the 1990s. The historical material includes minutes, reports, administrative files, artifacts, and photographs depicting nursing and nurse education. These materials primarily concern three establishments which were merged to form the Albert Einstein Medical Center in 1952: the Jewish Hospital, established 1867; the Mt. Sinai Hospital, established in 1905; and the Northern Liberties Hospital established in 1920. (It should be noted that there are no significant records of the Northern Liberties Hospital in this collection.)

Abstract:
The Medico-Chirurgical College had its origins in 1848 as the Medico-Chirurgical Society, but it would not be until 1881 that Dr. George P. Oliver, who had been a member of the old society and held title to the new charter, organized a faculty to hold classes. In 1916 Medico-Chirurgical College's Department of Medicine and the Department of Dentistry merged with the University of Pennsylvania. The Medico-Chirurgical College and Hospital of Philadelphia Records consist mainly of administrative and financial records for the College and Hospital from the late nineteenth through to it's merger with the University of Pennsylvania in 1916.

Abstract:
The Jewish Family Service of Philadelphia traces its origins to the founding of the United Hebrew Charities, a relief organization established in 1869 through the merger of the United Hebrew Relief Association, United Hebrew Beneficent Society, United Hebrew Beneficent Fuel Society, Hebrew Mutual Aid Association, Hebrew Ladies' Sewing Society, and the German Ladies' Hebrew Benevolent Society. In 1983, the Jewish Family Service of Philadelphia merged with the Association for Jewish Children, an institutional foster home, child care, and adoption placement agency, to form the Jewish Family and Children's Agency. The collection contains administrative records, correspondence, agency studies and surveys, case files, population and casework statistics, financial records, programming material, and reports.

Abstract:
The Philadelphia Orchestra was founded in 1900, and has developed and maintained its status as a prominent symphonic ensemble throughout its existence. Its history informs and intersects with the broader history of music in the twentieth century, as well as numerous historical movements, events and developments on a regional, national and global scale. This portion of the collection comprises administrative records. These materials document the organizational operations of the Orchestra, covering its governance; personnel management; financial management and development; artistic leadership; promotional activities; labor relations; legal activities; building and facilities maintenance, renovations and construction; and all of the logistical operations regarding performances, tours, broadcasts, and recordings. The Dr. Theo George Wilson collection of Medical Committee for Human Rights (MCHR) material measures 2.2 linear feet, dates from 1962-1973, and is composed of MCHR administrative papers, topics focused on by the organization, and writings about or by MCHR. MCHR was a non-profit organization that worked for those with substandard health care, opened free clinics in inner cities, pressured medical schools to enroll more Black students, and advocated for abortion rights and other health related political issues. Dr. Theo George Wilson was a doctor and professor who served as a National Executive Director for MCHR in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
