Abstract:: The Truman and Underhill families were prominent Philadelphia-area Quaker families with close ties to Swarthmore College and active in social concerns. Best known is George Truman (1798-1877), Quaker merchant and doctor and a recognized minister who visited Indigenous Peoples in the American West and former Quaker settlements in the West Indies. He was one of the founders of Swarthmore College. This collection contains chiefly the papers of Benjamin Mott Underhill (1863-1930), with some Truman-Underhill family material including genealogical and family documents, one folder of correspondence, and a picture collection which includes family albums, cased photographs, and silhouettes of the Truman and Underhill families.

The best known from these families is George Truman (1798-1877). He was a Quaker merchant and doctor and a recognized minister who visited Native American tribes in the American West and former Quaker settlements in the West Indies. He was one of the founders of Swarthmore College. This collection contains three volumes of George Truman's correspondence, pictures, family memorabilia, and other miscellaneous items (such as lesson books). The correspondance is primarily between George Truman and his wife, along with other family members such as their children, and other Friends or acquaintances.

Abstract:: Sarah (Sallie) Jones was a Bucks County Hicksite Quaker. She was the daughter of Amos and Margery Jones of Makefield Monthly Meeting and was educated at Ercildoun School in Kennett, PA. In 1859, she married William G. Cox of Goshen Monthly Meeting. This collection contains family correspondence and correspondence between Sarah Jones and her schoolmates at Ercildoun Boarding School. It also includes miscellaneous material such as a sermon by George Truman (1863) and teaching certificates for Sarah Jones, 1843-1856.

Abstract:: This collection includes correspondence received by Dr. George Truman and his nephew Joseph. Included are letters from Samuel Janney regarding publications in the Friends Intelligencer, letters from Anson Lapham regarding the establishment of the Friends Historical Library at Swarthmore College, and letters from Edward Merritt regarding the history of the Friendly Association for Regaining and Preserving Peace with the Indians. Also included is a letter from Benjamin Hallowell regarding Ethan Hitchcock's book, Christ the Spirit.

Abstract:: Samuel McPherson Janney was a Virginia Quaker minister, author, educator, and reformer. In 1839 he opened a boarding school for girls in Loudoun County. He traveled widely in the ministry, meeting with other denominations as well as being immersed in the contemporary issues facing the Society of Friends. Among his activities were establishing schools for African Americans and women, creating public schools in Virginia, and the abolition of slavery. In 1869 he was appointed Superintendent of Indian Affairs in Nebraska. The collection contains primarily correspondence of Samuel M. Janney with family and with friends such as John Comly, Joseph Dugdale, Benjamin Ferris, William Dudley Foulke, Isaac T. Hopper, Halliday Jackson, Dillwyn Parrish, Edward Parrish, Moses Sheppard, John Jackson, Deborah Wharton, Halliday Jackson, Barclay White, William Dorsey, and George M. Truman.
