Abstract:

As a teacher, scholar, lawyer, and consultant, Lawrence P. King (1929-2001) played a role in reforming bankruptcy law from the 1960s to his death in 2001. King taught commercial and bankruptcy law at New York University Law School. He served on a number of congressional commissions formed to analyze and reform bankruptcy law, including the Advisory Committee on Bankruptcy Rules of the Judicial Conference of the United States. He gave speeches and participated in panels regarding bankruptcy legislation for a number of seminars and educational programs. He was an active member of the National Bankruptcy Conference, an organization of lawyers, judges, and professors dedicated to bankruptcy reform. He had leadership roles in National Bankruptcy Conference committees, including the Committee on Legislation, where he was Chairman. Abstract:

The National Bankruptcy Conference is a voluntary, non-profit, self-supporting organization of lawyers, law teachers, and bankruptcy judges who have achieved scholarly distinction in the field of bankruptcy law. Its purpose is to study the operation of bankruptcy and related laws and proposals for their reform. The Conference participated as a consultant to Congress in every substantial amendment of the Bankruptcy Act up to the 1970s. The collection includes minutes summaries of proceedings of National Bankruptcy Conference meetings from 1948 to 1996 and reports submitted by the Committee on Coordination of Uniform Commercial Code and Bankruptcy Act.

Abstract:

Randall J. Newsome (b. 1950) graduated from the University of Cincinnati Law School in 1975. In 1998, Newsome was appointed to the Northern District of California's bankruptcy court, where he became Chief Judge in 2004. Randall Newsome has served as a faculty member for the Federal Judicial Center since 1987. He joined the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges in 1983, serving as President from 1998-1999. He is a fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy. The collection (1993-2004) contains audio cassette tapes of interviews conducted by Newsome with figures in bankruptcy law, including judges, attorneys, and educators.

Abstract:

The Federal Judicial Center was established in 1967 to promote improvements in judicial administration in the United States courts. The center provides continuing education programs for the federal judiciary, including bankruptcy judges. The collection (1972-1985) includes presentations, transcribed to cassette tape, given by bankruptcy judges, scholars, and practitioners to participants of the Federal Judicial Center's workshops and seminars for bankruptcy judges.

Pearson has served as Assistant United States Trustee to the Justice Department in Wichita, Kan., United States Bankruptcy Judge for the Districts of Kansas and Colorado, and Professor of Law at Presidents College of Law in Wichita, Kan. He has participated in a number of bankruptcy and legal organizations, including the American Bankruptcy Institute, where he served on the Board of Directors from 1989 to 1998, as Secretary from 1991 to 1995, as a member of the Executive Committee from 1989 to 1994, and as Chair of the Committee on Bankruptcy Rules. Nancy Dreher was a member of the American College of Bankruptcy, Fellow of the American Bar Association, and member of the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges (NCBJ), where she served as Editor-in-Chief of the American Bankruptcy Law Journal from 1994 to 1998. Dreher also edited the NCBJ publication Conference News from 1999 to 2000, a period during which the newsletter underwent a thorough restructuring. The Nancy C. Dreher collection includes selected issues of the American Bankruptcy Law Journal, which Dreher edited from 1994 to 1998, and "Conference News," the official NCBJ newsletter that was edited by Dreher from 1999 to 2000. Kronish, Lieb, Weiner, and Hellman LLP Bankruptcy Judges Lawsuit files, 1984-1994 (inclusive)

Abstract:

On July 11, 1984, William Foley, Legislative Affairs Officer of the Administrative Office of the United States Courts ("Administrative Office"), issued a memorandum stating that the Administrative Office would not pay bankruptcy judges because, in its opinion, Congress had acted unlawfully by awarding retroactive terms of office to the normally presidentially-appointed bankruptcy judges. In response, on July 13, 1984, four bankruptcy judges sued Foley and the Administrative Office for abuse of power. The case became commonly known as Lundin v. Foley. The law firm of Kronish, Lieb, Shainswit, Weiner and Hellman (later, Kronish, Lieb, Weiner and Hellman) represented the bankruptcy judges. Richard Lieb served as the primary attorney on the case.
