Barclay Hall construction collection, 1875-1877 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The collection contains a series of architecutral plans and letters for Barclay Hall (completed 1877) including: a letter from the Haverford Executive Committee outlining proposed costs and donations, initial plans for the hall with first and second story floor plans drafted by Addison Hutton (Barclay's architect), a correspondence between W.S. Rhodes and the building's contractor (Yarnall and Cooper), proposals on ways to reduce building costs, and contracts for the construction of Barclay as well as the installation of its boiler.

Friends Freedmen's Association Records, 1863-1982 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Friends' Freedmen's Association was an organization of Philadelphia Quakers founded in 1863 as Friends' Association of Philadelphia and Its Vicinity, for the Relief of Colored Freemen. Its purpose was to provide relief and education to formerly enslaved people during and after the Civil War. The name was changed circa 1873. From 1947-1955 the Association supported black students in schools and summer work camps. From 1955-1970 the income from investments was used to provide grants for scholarship to needy black students. From 1970 income and principal was distributed yearly primarily among Bryn Mawr, Earlham, Guilford, and Haverford Colleges. In January 1982 the Association was dissolved. The funds were distributed among the four colleges named above to be used as aid to black students as the J. Henry Scattergood Scholarship Fund. Richard Tapper Cadbury Papers, 1799-1924 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Richard Tapper Cadbury (1853-1929) was a Quaker businessman, teacher, writer, and art connoisseur. His mother's brother, Earl Shinn, Jr., (1838-1886) was a well-known art critic. The collection contains correspondence and memorabilia of the Cadbury, Comfort, Haines, and Shinn families. The letters give a detailed picture of life in Philadelphia Quaker families of the mid 19th century, and of the hardships of those who participated in the California gold rush.
