Robert Barclay (1751-1830) was the son of Alexander and Ann (Hickman) Barclay of Philadelphia. He arrived in England for his education at the age of 12. In 1775, he married Rachel (Lloyd) Barclay (not the Rachel in this collection) with whom he had 15 children. His second wife was Margaret Hodgson. With others he established the brewery of Barclay, Perkins and Co.

Rachel Barclay (1743-1792) was the daughter of Sampson and Rachel Lloyd. In 1767, she married David Barclay. She was the author of "Select pieces of poetry intended to promote piety and virtue", 1795.

Primarily letters of Robert Barclay, a Quaker of the 18th- and early 19th-century, who established a brewery in England, on topics ranging from financial affairs and land transactions to personal matters.

Most of these letters, dated 1774-89, are from Robert Barclay (1751-1830), written from England to Dr. Thomas Parke, in Philadelphia, and relate to financial affairs, land transactions, and personal matters. Other letters are from Patience Warrell, 1774- 1794; James Barclay, 1744-54; Rachel Barclay, Jr., 1785; David Barclay, governor of East Jersey and Daniel Cox, governor of West Jersey, re boundary and division of lands; David Barclay, Jr.; etc. Also, translation of Robert Barclay's (the "Apologist," 1648-1690) reply to Nikolaus Arnold, 1675.
